Dear Shiloh Family,

The first cool snap of the season appeared suddenly as if someone left the cooler door open the night before.  The brisk northerly winds whipped across the field and bit like tiny bees.  However, the athletes were feeling their oats, and pranced around the gridiron like thoroughbreds in an open pasture.

The game had been moved from Friday to Thursday, and it was Tuesday. The loss of one preparation day brought a new sense of urgency to an already tense situation.  Coaches barked orders, whistles determined movement, players shouted and taunted, and the playlist blared over the PA system.  It was somewhere around bedlam and a beehive and teetered between chaos and calamity.  Then, like a dream, something changed my entire perspective.

Above the noise, beyond the hustle and bustle, over the confusion, I heard a small voice.  Don’t get too spiritual.  It wasn’t God, nor the Holy Spirit.  No, I heard a beautiful, squeaky little voice say, “Poppy.”  I whirled around just in time to see Josie, racing across the field.  She never broke stride, never looked at the players, didn’t care who was watching, but leapt straight in my arms and put a bearhug around my neck.  I had already spent the morning at the zoo with Brady, so as you can imagine, practice, and the remainder of the day went so much better.   It reminds me of a scene in the New Testament.

Mark 10:13-16: 13 Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them.  14 But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.  15 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it."  16 And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them. NKJV

Nothing breeds excitement better than little children, or new birth.  We are experiencing both at Shiloh.  New believers are being birthed into the family of God almost weekly.  Young believers are growing in the faith daily.  And yes, new babies are being born as well.  Don’t get so caught up in the craziness of the crowd or the loops of life and forget the bliss of birth.  Listen for the small voices that need big arms.

Speaking of little ones, we celebrate with Travis and Lea as we welcome little Samanta Lea Gordon.  Congrats!

Nothing seems to get to the heart of God, like the heart of a child.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
