Dear Shiloh Family,

Did you ever come to your senses and discover an err in your ways?  It seemed, it felt, you thought you were doing the right thing, but some event, person, or divine intervention awakened you to reality.

It was a fun-filled youth retreat to Panama City, Florida, and we were on our way.  Atlanta was hosting the summer Olympic games, so we decided to take the Alabama route to avoid the traffic.  With the teens secure on the bus, and adult workers placed strategically throughout, I felt comfortable enough with my team that I thought it a good time to bank some soon to be deprived sleep.  I was awakened from my stupor with these words from my sister, “I’m not going to tell him. You’re the bus driver. You tell him.”

“Well, you better wake him up, someone has to let him know.”

One must understand; this was before smart phones and GPS. I peeked through one partially opened eye just in time to see a road sign that read, Meridian, Mississippi.

“You gotta wake him, we have to make a decision.”

“I told you we should have taken that exit at Opelika.”

“That really doesn’t matter now, we have to find a new route.  Wake him up.”

I was really enjoying the conversation more than I was disappointed over the delay.  But I replied, “I’m awake.  What’s up?”

My always positive brother-in-law bus driver jovially assured me, “Hey, let me begin by saying, we’re making really good time. But we made slight detour.”

To which I replied, “Yep, it’s the first time I’ve been to PCB via Mississippi.”

We all laughed, charted a new route, and enjoyed one of the most profitable, God-filled retreats ever.  It only cost us an hour or so extra time.

The Apostle Paul related a detour in his life’s journey.  I will give you the highlights, but it would behoove one to read the entire chapter of Acts 26.

Acts 26:9-11: 9 "Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.  11 And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. NKJV

Acts 26:12-17: 12 "While thus occupied, as I journeyed to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 at midday, O king, along the road I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who journeyed with me. 14 And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'  15 So I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.  16 But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you.  NKJV

Acts 26:19-21: 19 "Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. NKJV

Paul thought he was doing the right thing until he met Jesus on the road to Damascus.  Jesus changed his life and rerouted his vision.

Many of us are great parents, citizens, and church members.  However, Jesus doesn’t seem to be a part of the journey, and certainly isn’t the ultimate destination.  It’s time we meet the Son, confess to the Father, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our steps.  Also, let’s focus our attention on lost and misguided people.  The world needs to know their risen Savior.

The GPS may not be updated to some new destinations, but it will always lead us home.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
