Dear Shiloh Family,

It wasn’t unusual for Don to invite us over to look at the newest project, painting, or acquisition.  He was the coolest guy ever and was always trading, building, or painting something.  Rummaging through his garage was better than the Dixie Dime Store.  So, we piled in Dad’s old 64 Chevy pick-up and made the 30-minute trek from Lafayette to Chickamauga.

Before we made the final turn into his driveway, my eyes fell on the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.  There, perched solidly on its kickstand, glistening in the evening sun was a Tiger minibike. It had black on black, double seat, chrome handlebars, fenders, and wheels, balloon tires, and was powered by an 8hp Brigs and Stratton engine…my dream mobile.

I leapt from the truck, but approached the machine as if the slightest breath would tilt it from its perfect position.  Our friend sauntered from the garage and nonchalantly offered, “I traded around for that thing last week.  I’m too big to ride it and need someone to test drive it for me.  Do you think you could ride it around the house a couple of times?”

I just nodded, but my mind was screaming, “Are you kidding! That bike was built for me. Of course, I can test it for you.”

He pulled the start rope, and it fired the first time. I made a round or two and he motioned me around for the victory lap.  I slid it to a stop, turned it off and all I could muster was, “Nice.”

Dad had been unusually quite during the entire melee, but his smile was deafening.  He crossed his arms and calmly asked, “How do ya like it?”

“Dad, that is awesome.”  I replied.

Then it happened; through cracked voice my Awesome Dad said the two words I never thought I’d hear in my wildest dreams, “It’s yours.”

The words were like honey flowing straight off the comb onto one of Mom’s hot buttered cat-head biscuits.  They were words that couldn’t be matched with letters from an audible or written alphabet.  Frankly, words would have been an insult.  As tears poured like rain, I ran into my father’s arms and shared his love as we wept together.  As a matter of fact, I think everyone within two blocks was bawling.  What a great day!  What a great Dad!

I remember another day I received something I didn’t deserve.  I was a hypocritical prodigal.  I was destitute, vile, degenerate, and alone…a sinner wallowing in the depts of filth and despair. I was going nowhere, but I was on the road to destruction.  Then one day I turned the corner and made the climb up Shiloh hill.

It had been there all along, but I saw it for the first time.  There, glistening in the “Son” light, was the vehicle of Grace.  It carried me to the feet of the Savior.  Then, like manna falling from heaven, I heard the two words I didn’t deserve and wasn’t sure I’d ever hear…

” I forgive.”  What a great day! What a great God!  What a wonderful Savior!

Colossians 2:13-15: 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. NKJV

As we enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, though things on the national front seem bleak, and the world view is twisted and skewed, we can still give thanks because our Heavenly Father knows exactly what we need, when we need it, and has the means to supply it.

1 John 2:12: 12 I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake. NKJV

Also, the Angel tree kids are now available.  This year, you have the option of filling an entire list for one Angel or you may choose to scan the provided QR code and buy individual toys.  If you use the QR code, the toys will be shipped directly to the school.

Obviously, I would love to see every child receive every item on his or her list.  I can’t wait to see the gifts lining our hallway, ready to be delivered.

Thankfulness is often expressed best without the cloudiness of words.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
