Dear Shiloh Family,

I had just exited my office after completing a wonderful meeting with a financial advisor and discussing taxes, investments, retirement…blah, blah, blah.   The guy is a wonderful guy and an excellent financial planner, but that stuff, though important and necessary, bores me stiff.  I entered the hallway just as Debbie and Wendy were putting the finishing touches on one of the church Christmas trees.

    “That looks awesome.”

Almost in unison they replied, “Thank you.”

“Pastor, I put your lights up in the sanctuary.” Debbie informed.

     “Awesome, I love the lights.”

“I know you do.  Now, all you have to do is get someone to plug them in on Sunday.”

I thought about that conversation.  I really do love the lights and what they represent.  I love the fact that they shine so brightly on Christmas.  It also makes me reminiscent of my childhood and days with my own children.

One of my vivid memories was a fun game we played while riding in the car.  We made a competition of counting the houses bedecked with twinkling strings and yule tide ornaments.  As it grew closer to the big day, the number of illuminated residences increased.  Occasionally, when traveling around dusk, as if they knew we were playing the counting game, a homeowner would plug in the lights just as we drove by.  The silent, dark, dwelling became a living, moving, shining proclamation of the birth of a Savior.

John 8:12: 12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. KJV

On our journey here at Shiloh, it is awesome to see the light of Jesus beginning to shine as more and more of you are getting “plugged in.”   A teen becomes a star in the community, a Mom sheds light in a new Bible study at the school, a Daddy shines through the darkness and an entire family begins to glow for the Savior.  Twinkling, colorful, glowing, burning lights are constantly appearing throughout our church and community.

Shiloh, you are making a difference!  People are following the beacon to safe harbor.  Keep shining your light.

Matthew 5:14: 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. KJV

A light without a permanent source is easily extinguished.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
