Dear Shiloh Family,

Wrapping presents is not my forte.  I often ask my girls to wrap Anita’s gifts. Every fold is perfect, and every line is straight as an arrow. The packages are smooth as a pair of starched jeans.   However, occasionally, I’ll get a bit ambitious and plunge right in.  Inevitably, during the unwrapping ceremony, one of the kids will sneer, “You wrapped this one yourself, didn’t you Dad?”

You see, when I endeavor to cover the boxes, the beautiful Christmas wrap takes on the appearance of last week’s newspaper.  The edges are wrinkled, the lines are jagged, cellophane tape partially hides the accidental tears, and the excess dog-eared corners are wadded underneath the folds.   But hey!  The bow is perfectly centered.

Consequently, underneath the disheveled, butchered wrapping paper lies what really matters…the gift.  Most of the time, it’s a gift chosen specifically for my bride, for a specific purpose, and it carries a specific sentiment shared only by her and me.  After she gets past the first external flaw, the gift is all that is important.

I seem to spend a lot of time beautifying the external façade of my life.  There are futile attempts to hide the tears, wrinkles, rough edges, and excess baggage.  However, since the day I accepted Jesus into my heart, and allowed the Holy Spirit to work from the inside, God the Father looks past all the outward failures, and sees only the gift…His precious gift to mankind.

As a matter of fact, Jesus is continually working in and through the church so that He can one day present the precious bride of Christ, perfect and spotless.

Ephesians 5:26-27: 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. NKJV

As we experience the joy of giving and receiving this Christmas season, I pray that our thoughts will be directed to the greatest gift ever given.  My hope is that many will be encouraged to accept God’s gift of salvation through His son, Jesus Christ.  Remember, He not only saves you and cleans up the inside, but he also irons out the wrinkles on the outside as well.

1 Peter 5:10-11: 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. NKJV

A new vehicle, no matter how shiny and polished, is only a showroom spectacle until it yields to the will of the driver.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
