Dear Shiloh Family,

You can tell a lot about what people really think by observing their facial expressions.  Often, folks will tell you they like you or are pleased with your actions, but the dead eyes and blank stare send vibes to the contrary.

Last week, for the Men’s Bible study, Meemaw O’Neal (Mrs. Becky) cooked some of the best turnips I have ever eaten.  The guys dipped spoonsful into their plates.  However, the first bite revealed wide eyes, wrinkled brows, and shear surprise. It was obvious that Mom’s red top turnips had been mistaken for Monica’s famous mashed potatoes.  It was hilarious!  Consequently, most of the men enjoyed it.

A similar event happened in a fancy restaurant in Gatlinburg a few years ago when Anita ordered a baked potato with extra butter.  She was meticulous in the preparation.  The conscientious waiter even placed the two cups of butter on the side to allow my wife to create the perfect spud masterpiece.  Ever so slowly the ingredients were mixed into the open chasm of peel and aluminum foil.  Even slower the fork was raised for the first taste of tater heaven.  For fear of losing my place at my own table, I dare not attempt to describe the look on my beautiful bride’s tormented face when she discovered the cups were filled with horse radish instead of butter.  Contempt, just shy of murder radiated from those normally peace-giving eyes.

On the flip side, I am ecstatic about faces of love in and around Shiloh lately.   As we delivered Christmas to Angels at half a dozen schools, the countenances of our College and Career students beamed with the spirit of Christmas.

Mother Theresa said, “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”  I stand with Ben Carsson who stated, “Happiness doesn’t result from what we get but from what we give.”   I wish everyone who participated in the Angel Tree project could have seen the smiles and appreciation of the teachers as our young adults paraded gifts of love and kindness into the designated rooms. I truly understand what Abraham Lincoln meant when he said, “To ease another’s heartache is to forget one’s own.”

Luke 6:38:  38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."  NKJV

Sunday, our FLC was packed with smiling, satisfied faces. If anyone left hungry, it was of their own making.  I can’t remember when I’ve seen so much food at Shiloh.  Ladies and Gentlemen, you went above and beyond expectation.  My heart was also warmed by all those who pitched in to assist in the cleanup.  Even folks who are not yet members of our church worked with great diligence to take out garbage, break down tables and fold chairs.

I also extend a special thanks to Kami and her team for coordinating all our efforts.  And none of this would have been possible without the service of your Deacons and their wives.

Nope, you just can’t hide love when it spills out of the heart onto the face.  It just gets all over everyone and becomes contagious.  I pray it continues to spread throughout the Shiloh community.

And to top it all off, we are baptizing again this Sunday.  Praise the Lord!  If you would like to be baptized, contact Melissa in the office, David Brown, or me.

People hear our song and sermon in the church, but they respond to our service in the community.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
