Dear Shiloh Family,

The entourage, consisting of one daughter, two sons-in-law, grandbabies, Principal, AP, several teachers, and a news 12 cameraman, made its way down the Chickamauga Elementary hallway.  We burst through the door with the element of total surprise, and the principal presented Jensen with the News 12 Golden Apple Award for teachers. Adequate vocabulary does not exist to articulate my emotions.

After the accolades, applause, tears, and thank-you’s, the interview process began. As I scanned the room, I couldn’t help but swell with pride and nostalgia, not only for the accomplishments of my daughter, but also that I was surrounded by most of my children, grandchildren, cherished friends, and former colleagues. However, the Halmark moment was interrupted when I heard the interviewer ask Jensen what inspired her to become a teacher. The reality of the question nearly drove me to my knees.  What, if anything, had I done to spark a flame, and burn a pathway for my kids?

I couldn’t hear all the dialogue, but I heard her mention faith in Jesus Christ, family values, morals, and love for children.  I also detected a statement to the fact that she and I had taught together for several years.  At which point, the reporter whirled, stuck the camera in my face, and posed the question, “so, Dad, how did you inspire Jensen to be a teacher?”  I stuttered, stammered, and simply couldn’t find a sufficient answer.  I know it’s difficult for some of you to believe I was at a loss for words. However, there was one thing of which I was most certain, so I answered, “I’m not sure about that, but I know I have learned more from her than I ever taught, In fact, all my inspiration comes from my three kids.”  Of that, I am sure.

The Lord told Joshua, after Israel had crossed over Jordan, to make a memorial from stones so that the children would forever remember what Jehovah had done.  Many of those children became great warriors of faith.  They learned, and gave back because of Joshua’s faithful leadership and teaching.

Joshua 4:21-23 21 Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What are these stones?' 22 then you shall let your children know, saying, 'Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land'; NKJV

My soul cries out in thankful praise for all of you who work with our children, students, and young adults.  Many of you are professional educators, some are coaches, and some are volunteer lay-workers.  In either case, you are planting precious seeds (good or bad) that will sprout and blossom into our church and community.  Inevitably, each seed will produce much fruit and grain. What are we planting?  What are we cultivating them to become?

Matthew 19:13-14: 13 Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." NKJV

A special thank you as well to all who attended the SALT meeting Sunday.  It was an awesome turn-out and even better participation.  Thanks for loving your church and serving your Lord.

We often complain the awful state of today’s youth, until someone reminds us that we are the adults who raised them.

God Bless You All,

Pastor Derrell

PASTOR’S NOTE:  I feel compelled to address church needs.  I don’t say much about tithing/giving because you are such a gracious body of believers.  However, we have the largest budget in our church history.  Consequently, we have more ministries and the needs that go with them.  Therefore, I must encourage everyone to pray about weekly tithing and other generous contributions.  The church is not a business, but even a body needs nourishment.  God bless you in all that you do for the kingdom.

PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS:  If you would like to meet to discuss membership at Shiloh, I would love to meet with you between the two morning services from 10:00 – 10:30 AM.  Please schedule the appointment through the church office.

If you choose to meet at the church during the week, PLEASE!  Let Melissa know the time and location (room) for your ministries.  It is imperative that we coordinate all gatherings at the church. If you have questions about Shiloh ministries, contact us at secretary@shilohbaptistministry.com.
