Dear Shiloh Family,

It seems like Pastors are poor listeners, especially to their own sermons, and don’t always practice what they preach.  Unfortunately, I am no exception. Very often, the content of my newsletter is fed from fodder of the mishaps of my children or grandchildren.  However, this week’s conundrum is of my own making…literally.

Each week, our wonderful Prayer Ministry director sends encouraging texts to different groups of leaders each day.  Many of the recipients return the sentiment with an agreeable emoji, amen, or thank you; likewise, I fully intended to do just that.  Here is where it got interesting because I was in the process of multitasking, too many irons in the fire, to much food in my mouth, not enough hands-on deck, too busy, or whatever cliché you choose. (I must remind the reader that I just preached on doing the job God called you to do).

In retrospect, I could have blamed it on autofill, a computer hacker, or the Russians, but I chose to swallow the pill.  I was checking on hospital patients, sermon research, replying to off-the-wall questions and other texts, and without thinking…obviously, I replied to the prayer group with these words, “What is consumption?”

My imagination runs wild as I contemplate the responses on the other end, ”Poor old guy. What in the world?  Whaaat? Or, Pastor has finally lost it.”  I know because I was saying the same things to myself.  After staring at the ceiling for a while, I finally just replied, “Sorry, wrong group.”  That’s all I could muster.  It must have sufficed, because no one even commented.

Philippians 3:13-14: 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. NKJV

We are studying the life of the 12 apostles of Jesus.  They came from every walk of life.  They were ordinary people who developed a deep-rooted love for Jesus and His message.  They each had a special place with a specific function in that chosen group of followers. In the process they often lost focus and deviated from the task at hand.

Likewise, we are called to function in the body of Christ.  We have been given individual gifts.  It is dangerous when we get distracted or overloaded.

I encourage you to find that one thing of which you are most passionate.  Develop skills to enhance your ministry. But most importantly, do your passion well!

Philippians 4:9:9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. NKJV

It is not a passion until you can do nothing else but it.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
