Dear Shiloh Family,

The familiar, but mundane hum of voices outside my office changed to mischievous, but surprise-laden giggles.  It was more than my curiosity could withstand, so after a bit of eavesdropping, I heard my little sister exclaim:

“No, I didn’t order it.  It came from my friend’s grandmother’s old home place.  It was in a box.  Isn’t it great?”

I had to investigate, so I peered around the door casing of the soon to be newly remodeled restroom at a beautiful twin chandelier that will eventually accentuate a fabulous double vanity.  She was right; it was great!  An old article that once illuminated the way and warmed the hearts of children and grandchildren, will now light the way for primping, perusing, pleasing, and preparation for praise for many years to come.  Oh, the conversations that will be shared under the beams of the once forgotten.  That which was discarded as useless, has now become a beacon of beautiful usefulness.

Images danced in my mind as I contemplated the many uses of light in our homes alone.  We have oven lights for pot roast and pizza, and lights in the frig for juices and jellies.   Livingroom lights illuminate family and furniture.  There are microwave lights for popcorn, and Pop Tarts, and lights that can withstand the heat in clothes dryers to enable us to view tee shirts and towels.  Homes are often equipped with motion sensitive spots for pets and prowlers, and porch lights for parties and protection.  These and many more are designed for specific functions placed in strategic locations, but they all originate from the same source, and are driven by the same power.

Likewise, our Lord commissioned us to be lights in a dark world.

Matthew 5:14-16:  14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. NKJV

Once we become born again followers of Jesus, we have the light of the Holy Spirit shining in and through us.  We are commanded to shine wherever He has placed us.  We all have different functions, but we all have the same power in us, and it all originates through Him.  Thanks to His grace, we are never too old, outdated, nor overshadowed to shine for the Lord.

BTW, we have a new light shinning in our church family.  Anita and I had the privilege of leading a precious lady to Jesus after the second service last Sunday.  I know it was a direct reflection of the beacon of love shining from the Shiloh family.

I am looking forward to Easter Sunday at Shiloh.  We will begin the day with a Sunrise Service at 7:00 AM.  Kami and her team will serve breakfast immediately following.  Sunday School will follow the breakfast at the normal 9:45 hour, and we will have an outdoor/drive-up worship experience at 11:00.  The College/Career ministry is sponsoring an Easter Egg hunt to cap off the morning.  What a great day.  Please pray for God’s presence and good weather.

And please, sign up if you intend to eat breakfast with us.

On Saturday, April 9th, the College/Career ministry is sponsoring a walk-through-the-community day to hand out flyers and invite the community to Easter at Shiloh.  We plan to meet at the church around 11:00 AM and welcome any volunteers.

Even the smallest light negates total darkness.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
