Dear Shiloh Family,

We could hear the trailer raddling when he turned onto the long drive leading up to the parsonage.  Atop the trailer was a 15’ walk-thru windshield runabout…a boat.  We had a boat!  Dad had finally done it.  Our dream had come true.

Our long-awaited mini yacht was equipped with absolutely no amenities.  It was driven by a 4 cyl. inboard Volvo engine (with a few added Chrysler parts), upholstery that needed mending, no life jackets, and no electronics.  We didn’t even have a paddle, and btw, the motor wasn’t running.  However, Terry and I were oblivious to those minor details because WE HAD A BOAT.  Besides, we were crying so hard, we couldn’t have seen them anyway.

It strained my memory banks to recall even the afore mentioned details, but I vividly remember the following days that were filled with scrubbing, polishing, mending and working on that old inboard…with our Dad.  We worked on it three days to enjoy one day on the lake, which is pretty common for most boat owners.  Consequently, there is very little water on Lake Chatuge, in Hiawassee, GA that ole boat hasn’t navigated.

The love was not limited to our family.  Dad used it on church camping outings, retreats, and just general excursions.  Kids who had never seen a boat, rode, fished, and tried their athletic prowess on water skis in that remodeled watercraft.

Though the details of that first boat fail me, the way Dad used it to create quality time with Monica, Terry, and me, and how he incorporated it into the ministry are like watercolor paintings forever etched in the halls of memory within the depts of my soul. The pictures are portraits of our Heavenly father and His love for us and how He creates little things that draw us to the greatest gift ever given by a father.  His son, Jesus Christ.

Luke 11:11-13

11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" NKJV

Dads, thank you for time spent and lessons learned.  And from a Pastor’s heart, thank you for stitching your family into the fabric of Shiloh and its ministries.  HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Little things from a Dad, become foundations to a son.

P.S.  I extend a special thanks to all who participated in VBS.  It was amazing to see a wonderful team at work for the sake of Christ in the ministry of the Gospel.  I especially thank my precious wife for the hours of preparation and love that made it all possible.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
