Dear Shiloh Family,

We were scurrying like two packrats to get clothing, shoes, electronics, and anything not nailed down inside before the impending storm arrived.

Ten minutes earlier we were mowing and doing odd tasks around the yard in dead still 90-degree temps.  There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, and we had big plans to finish our chores and watch the Braves on the back deck.

However, in a matter of a few minutes, conditions had changed to gale-force winds, dark ominous clouds, and rolling thunder over Lookout Mountain.  By the time we had gathered our belongings, the bright Summer 4:00 PM daylight had become 4:00 AM, dark and unseasonably cool.  Fortunately, under the shelter of our home, we nestled in safety as the raging storm passed.

Proverbs 27:1

27 Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. KJV

The storm minutely changed our lives in moments. However, many lost power during the torrent, others had trees fall on their homes and vehicles, and some lost loved ones. The Lord graciously protected us.

Not only are we not promised tomorrow; we are not guaranteed one more breath.  Matthew’s gospel gives us these words of our Lord:

Matthew 6:33-34: 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.  NKJV

Let us love longer, laugh harder, live for Jesus, and lead others to Him.  He not only knows tomorrow, but he also holds it in his hands.

James 4:13-16

13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."  NKJV

One of our dear brothers took last week’s sermon to heart.  I’m ecstatic to report that he took the tools of the Roman Road, and Dr. Moyer’s pamphlet, and led his Brother-in-law to Jesus last Sunday evening.  Praise the Lord!  That’s living for the moment and redeeming the time.

If we believe Jesus controls our eternity, we should surely allow him to control our now.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
