Dear Shiloh Family,

They lurk from the depths, stalk their prey, and explode with the power of a tractor trailer and the surprise of a stealth bomber.  They rip and tear, pull and tug until the victim is rendered helpless.  Yet, we continue to play in their living room.  They are incredible predators and yes, I love watching Shark Week.

Sharks are some of the most feared of all living creatures on planet Earth, but we don’t fear them enough to stay out of their kitchen.  Ironically, some of the scenarios that draw those carnivorous missiles to an area…pleasant climate, white beaches, crashing waves, warm waters, playful sea creatures, and hordes of colorful bait fish, are people magnets as well.  Ocean goers often fail to take proper precaution, consequentially becoming easy fare.  We become such a part of the environment; we take on the appearance of an evening meal.  And yep, as soon as I am able, I’ll be right back on the beach.

I know this sounds gory, but it is reality. And I can’t help but give it a spiritual application.  Christians are surrounded by Satan and his predators. The lion stalks us and “seeks to devour us.”  The evil one frequents the places we love and seek pleasure, and he even invades our family gatherings.  He blindsides us when we least expect it and gnaws at the very fiber of our foundations.

Psalm 56:2-4:

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. 3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. 4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. KJV

However, I remind you that we have a protector who watches over us.  He shields us from the barrage of attacks and reveals the hiding places of assailants.  He leads us to waters that are safe and calm.  As we pass near the jaws of death, fear need not deter us.  He has all it takes to give us comfort in the face of danger.  He is our good, good Father.  He is our great Shepherd.   He is Lord!

Psalm 23

23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. KJV

Shiloh, don’t fear nor be dismayed.  God is still in control.  We have a lot going on in and around your church in the next few months. Satan doesn’t like it and is fighting.  Be encouraged, “Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.”

When if fail to see the Lord in every situation, I have stopped looking for Him.

God bless you all,
Pastor Derrell
