Dear Shiloh Family,

On any given Friday night from early August to mid-November, stadiums and bleachers will be filled with half-crazed parents, siblings, friends, and general fans.  Most will be sporting team colors complete with logos and insignia.  Bands will blare out fight songs and alma maters.  Cheerleaders will yell, yell, yell for their team and expend great energy to direct all attention to the particular 11 players who happen to be on the field at the time.

However, there will be other team members present as well.  On the sidelines, the scout team (those who ran the opposing team’s plays against the varsity all week) will be poised with anticipation, the underclassmen or future stars, will talk about how they could do better if given a chance, and the ones who may never enter a varsity contest will be proud to be on the team.

Consequently, every afore mentioned individual practiced the same hours, endured the same weather conditions, and were subjected to the same rules as those in the spotlights.  Many of their names won’t make it in the paper, or be seen on highlight films, but they are very much an integral part of the success of the team and future program.  Even the water boys and ball boys whose eyes dance with envy and admiration will insert themselves as intricate pieces of the gridiron puzzle.

Romans 12:4-8: 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: NKJV

Likewise, on any given Sunday, a few folks are out front and visible in the worship experience of our church.  However, there are many more members of the body of Christ working behind the scenes.  They are praying, teaching, singing, painting, cleaning, mowing, ushering, greeting, encouraging, or wiping babies; and they are very much an integral part of our present and future growth.  The world stadium cheers and jeers as we offer the message of hope.  Young Christians and Saints-to-be are influenced by our participation efforts, whether faithless or true.

More importantly, our Great Commander and Father is observing our worship, the Son is advocating our efforts, the Spirit is leading our way, and the “great cloud of witnesses” cheer from the arena of glory.  Our team color is white, our insignia is the cross, our banner is red, our fight song is “Onward Christian Soldier”, and our alma mater is “Amazing Grace.”  Fight on!  Fight on!  Fight on!

Hebrews 12:1-3:  12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  NIV

We are never more significant in the eyes of God as when we make ourselves insignificant in the eyes of the world.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
